Where does the money go?

In November 2008 $47,000 were distributed to our schools. Our major focus during 2007 and 2008 was increasing the endowment fund, therefore less immediate use funds were available for distribution then in the previous years.

In April, the School Site Council (SSC) conducted a parent survey to determine which programs and educational resources were valued most by parents and were perceived to provide the most educational benefits to students. The Science Program, launched two years ago, continues to be ranked highly in both educational value and importance to parents.
To back up the parent survey, the SSC has a measurable goal as part of the Kings Mountain School Site Plan (approved annually by the School Board) dedicated to the Science program. It is monitored and tracked throughout the year. In the two years since the Science program was initiated, the school’s scores on standardized testing have shown dramatic increases in Science going from:
  2004 2005 2006
Basic   50%
Proficient 50% 67% 60%
Advanced   33%  40%
KMEF has historically participated in the Wine Walk and has traditionally focused this funding towards the annual budget. The KMEF is pleased that the Back to Basics funding is one of the few grants with the flexibility to be applied to a teacher’s salary. The funds will be directly applied to the Science Program. The goal of the Science program is to bring the textbook concepts of science to life in the classroom. By going beyond the textbooks and using age-appropriate games, hands-on experiments and other creative learning tools, students are now being introduced to scientific procedures and concepts based on the curriculum in a very stimulating learning environment. $3,527 Back to Basics funds will go towards this program consultant. In addition to the consultant, KMEF expects to fund purchases that will provide supplies for this beneficial new program. $500 of the Back to Basics funding will go towards purchase of science equipment and consumables this year.
